The New York Mets have several gaps to address in their starting rotation this offseason. They’re reportedly interested in a number of free-agent pitchers, with Corbin Burnes as their top target. President of Baseball Operations David Stearns could also explore the trade market to bolster the rotation.

One potential trade option could involve Seattle Mariners ace, a three-time All-Star. He is under contract through 2025 as part of a five-year, $108 million deal, with annual earnings of $24.15 million for the next three seasons.

Additionally, there’s a $25 million vesting option for 2028 if he throws 180+ innings in 2027, according to Spotrac. He has been a workhorse for Seattle, making over 30 starts in both 2023 and 2024, with a record of 25-21, a 3.48 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 394 strikeouts in 372 1/3 innings.

The 31-year-old could be an appealing addition to the Mets’ rotation due to his consistent performance and reliability. He’s logged at least 30 starts in five seasons since 2018 and surpassed 170 innings four times.

What might the Mariners seek in return? Tim Boyle of FanSided’s Rising Apple suggests that a package involving utility player Jeff McNeil and a prospect or two could be enticing. Seattle’s pitching staff ranked among the best in 2024, but their offense struggled significantly, especially at second base, where they ranked 21st in OPS (.658) and led the league in strikeouts (1,625).

McNeil hasn’t matched his 2022 All-Star level, hitting .257/.323/.381 over 1,120 plate appearances since 2023. However, he showed improvement in the latter half of 2024, slashing .289/.376/.547 before landing on the injured list. Known for his contact skills and versatility, McNeil could provide Seattle with a stable second base option.

This potential trade could allow the Mets to shed the remaining $50 million on McNeil’s contract while adding an experienced, affordable starter to their rotation.
