New York Mets owner Steve Cohen stated on Saturday that while the team is proceeding with its usual offseason roster-building process regardless of Pete Alonso’s status, there remains a chance the free-agent first baseman could return in 2025.
That possibility may have recently improved.
According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets might re-engage in negotiations with Alonso’s representatives following a reported snag in talks between Alonso and the Toronto Blue Jays.
Martino noted that discussions between Alonso and Toronto had been progressing last week, per league sources, but a potential hurdle arose regarding deferred money—an issue tied to the Blue Jays’ heavily deferred contract with outfielder Anthony Santander.

Santander is reportedly deferring more than half of his five-year, $92.5 million deal.
Reports of Toronto’s interest in Alonso gained traction last week, with one Twitter/X user likening the situation to the Blue Jays “fumbling on the 10-yard line”—an analogy Martino agreed with.
It appears Toronto is pushing for deferred payments in Alonso’s contract, which could be a sticking point for his camp.
