BREAKING NEWS: New York Mets blockbuster deal lands Toronto Blue Jays’ high-profile reliever

The New York Mets announced a signing on Wednesday—not a blockbuster acquisition like Juan Soto or a major addition to their rotation or lineup. Instead, they brought in left-handed reliever, a dependable MLB bullpen arm since 2019 with potential for further growth.

According to SNY on X, “The Mets have signed Génesis Cabrera to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training. Cabrera, who pitched for the Cardinals from 2019 until being traded to the Blue Jays in 2023, recorded a 3.59 ERA over 69 appearances with Toronto in 2024, along with two saves.”

This signing represents a low-risk, high-reward move for the Mets. By signing Cabrera to a minor league deal, the team can evaluate his performance and capabilities throughout the offseason and spring training without a significant financial commitment. Cabrera will need to prove himself to secure a spot in the bullpen.

Cabrera brings experience and some upside to the Mets

Cabrera, at 28, is still relatively young but brings six seasons of MLB experience and a respectable career ERA of 3.89. However, control issues have been a recurring challenge for him, as evidenced by 136 walks over 275.2 innings.

The Mets have some intriguing tools to build upon. Cabrera features a 96-mph fastball that could benefit from refinement, along with a 90-mph cutter that achieved an impressive 34.1% whiff rate in 2024. He also utilizes three additional pitches.

If the Mets can help Cabrera improve his fastball and throw more strikes, he has the potential for a breakout season in Queens. Even if he doesn’t make significant strides, his addition to the bullpen could prove to be a savvy move, providing New York with a dependable option for the middle to late innings.
