The New York Mets are laser-focused on adding superstars in free agency this offseason. They’re strongly linked to elite talent like outfielder Juan Soto and top pitchers Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes.
However, one name they’re particularly connected to—and for good reason—is longtime fan favorite.
Alonso, 29, spent the first six years of his MLB career with the Mets before hitting free agency this winter. During his tenure in New York, he hit an impressive 226 home runs across 846 games.
According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Alonso’s time with the Mets might not be over. Feinsand identified him as a strong candidate for a Mets reunion this offseason.

“Alonso is the biggest name among the Mets’ free agents, and while there’s been plenty of buzz about New York pursuing Soto, bringing back Alonso is definitely on the table,” Feinsand wrote. “He’s been the face of the franchise for several years, and his clutch performances in October only boost his case.”
The possibility of Alonso re-signing has been a hot topic for months, with Mets fans actively campaigning for it. However, finances could complicate matters. If the Mets secure Juan Soto, it’s unlikely they’ll have the budget to retain Alonso, especially with Spotrac projecting his next contract at $174 million.
Ultimately, Alonso’s future with the Mets will hinge on other moves made by owner Steve Cohen, but it’s clear the beloved first baseman remains a top priority for the team.
