The New Orleans Saints were active in free agency this offseason, making it clear they intend to compete in 2025. They bolstered their roster by signing veterans Justin Reid and Brandin Cooks while also re-signing Chase Young and Juwan Johnson. While these moves reflect their short-term ambitions, the team could make more significant long-term investments in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Holding the 9th overall pick, the Saints are well-positioned to land a top-tier prospect, potentially one of the highly regarded quarterbacks like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders if they slip in the draft. However, they are more likely to target a top defensive player with their first selection.

Beyond the first round, the Saints’ approach becomes even more intriguing. With several roster needs and long-term salary cap challenges, they may need to take calculated risks in the draft.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, despite Derek Carr restructuring his contract this offseason, New Orleans remains a strong candidate to draft a young quarterback early.

The Saints have conducted extensive evaluations of the 2025 quarterback class. First-year head coach Kellen Moore attended Ole Miss’s Pro Day to scout Jaxson Dart and has also observed private workouts for Cam Ward, Quinn Ewers, and Will Howard. Meanwhile, quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien has worked out Tyler Shough and Kyle McCord.

Unless Sanders falls to the ninth pick, New Orleans would likely wait until Day 2 to draft a quarterback.

However, with two third-round picks (71st and 93rd overall) and two fourth-rounders (112th and 131st overall), they have the flexibility to trade up into the late first round for a player like Dart.

Even if the Saints select Dart or Shough, Carr is expected to begin the season as the starter. However, given his recent injury history and limited upside, a rookie quarterback could take over by December.
