A significant update has emerged regarding New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr’s health, amid growing concern that he may miss the entire 2025 season if shoulder surgery becomes necessary.

Carr has so far avoided undergoing surgery on his injured shoulder, as such a procedure would likely sideline him for the entire upcoming season.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, no final decision has been made by Carr or the Saints about his immediate future.

“Derek Carr is hoping to avoid surgery,” Rapoport explained. “He wants to rehab, strengthen the shoulder, and aims to return in time for Week 1 — something that’s still on the table.”

Rapoport added, “There’s no clear answer yet — no confirmation that he’s definitely not having surgery or that he is. If he does have it, it’s a significant procedure that could cost him the season. He’s doing everything he can now to make it back in time.”

Carr’s 2024 campaign was cut short by a hand injury after appearing in just 10 games. He’s been working this offseason to regain full health.

Now entering his third year with New Orleans, Carr has yet to guide the Saints to a playoff berth. The team selected former Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in April’s draft, and the rookie could take over as starter if Carr is forced to sit out.

Carr, who turned 34 in March, is signed with the Saints through 2026. With the franchise in a rebuilding phase, his availability is seen as crucial to any postseason aspirations.

Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener round out the quarterback room, though it’s expected that one of them will be released before the regular season begins.
