The New York Mets will begin the season without Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, as both pitchers need to ramp up after missing time in spring training due to injuries. Consequently, Clay Holmes is slated to start on opening day for the Mets.

The Mets have significant expectations for this season after their loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. They signed Juan Soto and re-signed Pete Alonso on a deal that allows him to opt out after the season.

New York Mets Brandon Sproat shows off heat in MLB Futures Game

In a proposal from Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer, the Mets could trade for pitching help from the Miami Marlins:

Mets receive: right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcántara
Marlins receive: right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat (Mets’ No.1 prospect) and shortstop/outfielder Jett Williams (Mets’ No.2 prospect)

Rymer suggested that if the Mets are serious about pursuing a World Series title, they may have to make this kind of trade for Alcántara. Although it may not be an easy decision for Mets’ president of baseball operations, David Stearns, the Marlins could benefit significantly by turning Alcántara into a future ace and a potential starting shortstop.

Sproat, who impressed in the minors in 2024, is expected to be ready soon. Alcántara, who won the 2022 NL Cy Young Award with a 2.28 ERA and 207 strikeouts, led the league with six complete games and 228 2/3 innings pitched, struggled in 2023 and missed all of 2024, lowering his trade value.

Even when healthy, the Mets’ rotation was not the strongest, and adding Alcántara could be a key move, even when the staff is at full strength. Alcántara signed a five-year, $56 million extension in 2021, which includes a $21 million club option for 2027. He has a 3.32 career ERA in 146 games.
