Breaking News: Mets’ Latest Trade Lands $73.5 Million Ace Amid Injuries

Although the New York Mets’ pitching staff has arguably been the best in Major League Baseball, there’s a risk things could unravel if the team doesn’t make wise decisions in the coming months. Despite dealing with injuries, the Mets’ rotation has performed at an elite level—but it feels like it could fall apart at any moment.

To reinforce their rotation, the Mets are expected to explore trade options at the deadline, and one standout name is Minnesota Twins right-hander.

Over the past few seasons, López has consistently delivered strong performances and is off to an excellent start this year, boasting a 2.25 ERA with 26 strikeouts and only four walks—especially notable after signing a four-year, $73.5 million contract.

Zachary Howell of ClutchPoints suggested a potential trade for López, noting the Mets’ injury issues as a reason they’ll likely pursue him.

He pointed out that López is drawing attention in trade talks as the Twins, who are struggling in the American League, may need to consider moving him. Despite the team’s rough start, López has been a bright spot in the rotation, though his win-loss record doesn’t reflect it due to poor run support.

“If López becomes available, the Mets will be one of several teams interested,” Howell wrote. “With Manaea and Montas still recovering and Senga having carried a heavy load, manager Carlos Mendoza could use another reliable arm—and López would be a great fit.”

Teams Interested in Lopez

It will be intriguing to watch how the New York Mets approach the trade deadline. The front office has made a series of smart moves in recent years, and with David Stearns now leading the way, there’s reason to believe they can pull off another successful deal.

Pablo Lopez is So Back

That said, the Mets might hesitate to give up their top prospects—something the Twins could demand in return, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Nightengale noted that several playoff contenders have already shown interest in acquiring the player.

“While the Miami Marlins are holding off on trading ace Sandy Alcantara (2-3, 8.31 ERA) until he shows improvement, multiple contenders are monitoring Minnesota Twins ace Pablo Lopez,” he wrote.

Lopez recently returned from a hamstring injury and is in the second year of a four-year, $73.5 million contract. If the Twins continue to slump, they could consider moving him before the deadline.

Adding Pitching Is Always Wise

The Mets have needs beyond just Lopez and could benefit from adding another offensive contributor.

Still, bolstering the starting rotation is always a smart move—especially with the trade deadline nearing. If they want to remain competitive in the National League East, making this move would be a logical step.
