The Seattle Mariners made roster adjustments on Sunday, acquiring a former division rival while also placing a potential bullpen option on the injured list.
Seattle claimed right-handed pitcher Seth Martinez off waivers from the Miami Marlins. At the same time, right-hander Jackson Kowar was moved to the 60-day IL as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. These moves keep the Mariners’ 40-man roster at full capacity.
Martinez, a 30-year-old reliever, previously spent four seasons with the Houston Astros. Last year, he made 44 appearances, recording a 3-2 record with a 3.59 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 36 strikeouts, and 18 walks over 52 2/3 innings.

His best season came in 2022 when he posted a 2.09 ERA over 38 2/3 innings in 29 games. Over his MLB career, he holds a 6-6 record with a 3.93 ERA in 137 1/3 innings.
This offseason, Martinez has already been claimed off waivers three times, first by the Arizona Diamondbacks in November, then by the Marlins in February, and now by Seattle.
Kowar, a former first-round draft pick, pitched in two spring training games last year before undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair his right elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament.

He was acquired last offseason in a trade with Atlanta, which sent outfielder Jarred Kelenic, left-hander Marco Gonzales, and first baseman Evan White to the Braves.
After throwing bullpen sessions earlier this spring, Kowar is not expected to return until at least late May, according to Mariners insider Shannon Drayer. In his MLB career, he has appeared in 39 games (eight starts) over three seasons, posting a 2-6 record with a 9.12 ERA.
