The Toronto Blue Jays are trading right-handed reliever Yimi García to the Seattle Mariners. In exchange, the Mariners will send outfielder Jonatan Clase and minor league catcher Jacob Sharp to Toronto. This deal, first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN, has been confirmed by the Blue Jays on social media. Recently, the Mariners have been busy reshaping their roster, including designating first baseman Ty France for assignment on Tuesday and making a significant move by acquiring Randy Arozarena from the Tampa Bay Rays. García is expected to help bridge the gap to closer Andrés Muñoz, as Matt Brash and Gregory Santos, who have been key setup men, are currently injured.

Stand-Out Season

García is having an outstanding season, boasting a strong 2.70 ERA and a 36.5% strikeout rate. He’s converted 5 of 6 save chances and has 10 holds this year.

The setup reliever recently came back from the injured list after a month-long absence due to nerve irritation in his elbow. In his latest appearance, he threw two innings, striking out five of the eight batters he faced.

Contract Year

García, now in his third season with the Blue Jays, will become a free agent after this season. Toronto had been considering trading him along with other players, as they focus on building for the future.

Beginnings

García first joined the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 2009 and was added to their 40-man roster in 2013. He debuted in the major leagues on September 1, 2014, facing the Washington Nationals, where he pitched two scoreless innings and struck out one batter.

Following his free agency in 2019, García signed with the Miami Marlins. He was then traded to the Houston Astros in July 2021. Later that year, in December, García signed with the Blue Jays.
