After signing second baseman Hyesong Kim in free agency, the Los Angeles Dodgers face some tough choices. With an already stacked outfield and plans to keep Mookie Betts in the infield for 2025, the Dodgers now have an abundance of infielders.
Among Kim, Miguel Rojas, Mookie Betts, Gavin Lux, and Max Muncy, it’s clear that someone will see limited playing time if they remain on the roster. Given the situation, Gavin Lux seems the most likely to be the odd man out, particularly since he already has a potential trade partner.
Seattle Mariners could show interest in Lux
The Seattle Mariners narrowly missed the playoffs last season and are exploring all possibilities to return to October baseball. The team boasts a talented core that includes J.P. Crawford, Randy Arozarena, Mitch Haniger, Luke Raley, Mitch Garver, and, of course, Julio Rodríguez — though much of their talent is concentrated in the outfield.

Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times has suggested that Gavin Lux could be a “logical fit” for the Mariners. The 27-year-old infielder remains under arbitration through 2026 and will become a free agent in 2027. In his most recent season, Lux posted a .251 batting average with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs. While he struck out 110 times in 139 games, strikeouts are less of a concern in today’s game.
Given the Dodgers’ abundance of infielders, trading Lux before the 2025 season begins seems plausible. Due to his inconsistent career performance, the Mariners likely wouldn’t have to part with top-tier prospects to acquire him.
Adding Lux would be a smart move for Seattle, as he has demonstrated glimpses of high potential despite his struggles with consistency. Lux’s versatility as an infielder and his ability to serve as a designated hitter make him a valuable addition. Keep an eye on potential trade discussions between the Dodgers and Mariners as the offseason progresses.
