The Atlanta Braves have faced some challenges with their pitching depth this season, particularly after Reynaldo López was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Although Spencer Strider briefly returned from elbow surgery to help stabilize the rotation, he made just one start before landing back on the injured list with a hamstring strain.
With their postseason hopes on the line, the Braves can’t afford to lose more ground in the National League. That urgency could prompt them to pursue a major trade for a starting pitcher in the near future.
One potential low-risk, high-reward option is St. Louis Cardinals veteran Erick Fedde. He could become a vital part of Atlanta’s rotation for the rest of the year.
Since returning to the majors last season, Fedde has been steady and effective, posting a 3.33 ERA over 27 innings in five starts this year.
He even turned in a strong outing against the Braves recently, which may have further piqued their interest. Atlanta might consider parting with one or two top-15 prospects to acquire him and strengthen their rotation for a postseason run.
Fedde’s contract is affordable and expires at the end of the season, making him an ideal rental. Given that he’s unlikely to remain with the Cardinals beyond this year, St. Louis has little incentive to keep him, setting the stage for a potential trade with Atlanta in the near future.
