Breaking News: Just in Pirates dysfunction leads to Braves’ reunion and Ron Washington’s hot seat

Atlanta Braves fans might have reason for optimism. While the Braves are hovering around a .500 record and still in the mix with the Mets and Phillies, the biggest MLB headline of the day is the Pittsburgh Pirates firing manager Derek Shelton.

Despite having ample opportunity to improve the team, Shelton was ultimately failed by a dysfunctional front office and ownership. Could Ron Washington be the next manager to go?

Washington, a fan favorite during his time in Atlanta, has faced challenges since taking over the Los Angeles Angels. He earned another managerial shot after leading the Texas Rangers to two World Series appearances before his dismissal. Brian Snitker valued Washington’s leadership and brought him on as the Braves’ third base coach in 2016.

Washington was a calming and influential presence in Atlanta, helping shape the winning culture that led to the 2021 World Series title. He’s been trying to bring that same energy to Anaheim, but the results have yet to materialize.

Ron Washington is on the hot seat with the Angels

Less than a week ago, Ron Washington acknowledged he had discussions with the team concerning both his and the Angels’ future.

“I’ve spoken with the team quite a bit. Honestly, I’m tired of all the meetings,” Washington said. “We’ve had so many of them, and after a while, it just becomes noise. I only call a meeting when I feel it’s necessary.”

According to Sam Blum of The Athletic, Washington doesn’t believe the Angels are playing poorly. Known as a players’ manager, it’s no surprise he’s defending his squad during a challenging stretch.

“We’re not playing awful baseball right now,” he said. “We just need to close out games better… that’s what will make the difference. The energy is there, the clubhouse vibe is positive—we just have to find a way to win more games.”

Currently sitting at 15-20, the Angels aren’t among the league’s worst teams. A seven-game losing streak certainly tested their resilience, but Washington hasn’t lost confidence.

Hired after the 2023 season, Washington led the Angels to a 63-99 record in his first year. With the team now five games under .500, fans have reason to wonder if he’s the right fit. Still, many Braves fans would argue he’s working with a limited roster beyond Mike Trout.

If the Angels part ways with him, Washington would likely be considered for a role on the Braves’ staff next offseason—a move that would be well-deserved.
