Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon is once again sidelined with an injury, continuing a disappointing tenure in Anaheim. The 2019 World Series champion signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels before the 2020 season but has played just 257 games since.

Rendon had a strong debut season in the shortened 2020 campaign, posting a 150 OPS+ in 52 games. However, injuries have plagued him ever since, and his production has declined significantly.

In his 257 games with the Angels, he has hit just 22 home runs with 93 RBI—a stark contrast to his 2019 season alone, when he smashed 34 homers and led the league with 126 RBI.

Ahead of the 2025 season, it was announced that Rendon would be out for an extended period after undergoing hip surgery. The Athletic’s Sam Blum reported on Feb. 12 that he had suffered a setback in his rehab, putting his future with the Angels in doubt.

On Monday, team owner Arte Moreno confirmed that Rendon will not play at all in 2025. “And [Anthony] Rendon has two years left on his deal, and he’s obviously not going to play this year,” Moreno said via MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger.

In response to Rendon’s uncertain status, the Angels signed former White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada this offseason. Moncada, who played just 12 games last year due to injury, is hoping to return to his 2019 form when he posted a 140 OPS+ in 132 games.
