Rafael Devers has yet to make his spring training debut for the Boston Red Sox as he continues recovering from lingering shoulder issues from the 2024 season. His workout schedule has been slightly delayed, but the team provided an update on his rehab on Feb. 25.

According to Christopher Smith of MassLive, Devers is set to take live batting practice for the first time this spring on Feb. 26. The Red Sox are aiming for him to appear in his first Grapefruit League game on March 5.

So far, the 28-year-old has been hitting off a pitching machine, and while he began taking ground balls on Feb. 22, he has yet to resume full-strength throwing.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told MLB.com’s Ian Browne that Devers will continue getting reps at third base throughout camp, preparing for a potential full-time role at the position this season. Meanwhile, Alex Bregman will play second base during spring training, though no final decision has been made on their defensive assignments for the regular season.

Red Sox update on Rafael Devers’ rehab, position battle with Alex Bregman

Alex Bregman started at third base for the Red Sox in their Feb. 22 game against the Blue Jays, but he’s been splitting time between second and third base during spring training. The former Astros infielder expressed his willingness to play wherever manager Alex Cora needs him to help the team win.

Rafael Devers, however, has taken a different stance. The typically reserved face of the Red Sox franchise was uncharacteristically firm in his refusal to move off third base. He takes pride in playing defense daily, even though Bregman is widely regarded as the stronger defender.

While shifting Devers to designated hitter and slotting Bregman at third would improve the infield defense, it would also create roster complications.

For now, Devers has the opportunity to prove himself against an elite defender at the position. Though he’s made highlight-reel plays at third, his consistency has long been a question mark—something Bregman mastered during his nine seasons in Houston. If Devers wants to keep his spot at the hot corner, he’ll need to elevate his defensive reliability and agility to match his new teammate.
