The St. Louis Cardinals’ offense has delivered inconsistent results in Spring Training so far, but a few standout performances are making a case for Opening Day roster spots.

While Spring Training stats don’t always translate to regular-season success, outfielder Victor Scott II’s strong early showing has increased the competition among established players fighting for playing time.

The Cardinals could clear a path for Victor Scott II if they trade from their center field depth

Michael Siani's first career home run

Last season, the Cardinals’ outfield situation was in constant flux due to injuries and underperformance. With top prospect Victor Scott II impressing in Spring Training, the team took a gamble and named him their Opening Day center fielder despite his lack of experience above Double-A. Unfortunately, his struggles at the plate led to a demotion to Memphis after just 18 games.

Scott’s departure opened the door for defensive specialist Michael Siani, who played 110 games in center field but struggled offensively, posting a 61 WRC+—39% below league average. Despite Siani’s lackluster bat, the Cardinals didn’t bring Scott back to the majors until August, and even then, he saw limited action with only 86 at-bats over 28 games.

Michael Siani makes the incredible sliding grab

Now, the most competitive position battle in Cardinals camp is center field. Lars Nootbaar has entered the mix as the team weighs whether to prioritize offense or defense. The decision is also influenced by Nolan Arenado’s presence, which affects how Brendan Donovan and Nolan Gorman fit into the lineup.

Given Scott’s need for consistent at-bats, the initial expectation was that he’d start in Memphis, with Siani making the roster as a defensive backup. However, Scott’s hot start in Spring Training may be altering that plan.

In just three games, Scott has showcased his potential, hitting .571 with a 1.953 OPS, highlighted by a homer and triple. Even in an out, his exit velocity of 105.9 mph stood out. He continued to impress against the Marlins, reaching base twice, stealing two bags, and scoring both times.

Victor Scott II recalled to MLB by St. Louis Cardinals

If the Cardinals want to clear space for Scott in the lineup, trading Siani could be the solution. A logical trade partner is the White Sox, who just lost Andrew Benintendi for over a month due to injury. Since Chicago is expected to struggle this season, acquiring Siani could give them a reliable defender while they await Benintendi’s return.

In return, the Cardinals wouldn’t receive a major asset, but they could land a low-level pitching prospect from the Sox’s deep farm system. If not, cash considerations or international bonus pool money could be in play.

While St. Louis fans may be wary of trading another young outfielder given past regrets, the risk with Siani is minimal since his offensive ceiling remains below league average. As the Cardinals shift toward a younger roster, it makes sense to give Scott a legitimate opportunity—if he proves he’s ready.
