The Cleveland Browns have had a challenging start to their season, sitting at 1-4. Their offensive struggles, having scored under 20 points in each game, may prompt changes across the team.

Due to their financial situation, particularly Deshaun Watson’s $72.9 million cap hit for 2025 and 2026, tanking seems difficult. However, the Browns could still opt to trade some of their key players to set up for future success. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggested that Greg Newsome II, a standout cornerback, might be a trade candidate. Knox mentioned the San Francisco 49ers as a potential landing spot.

Knox pointed out that the Browns are in a tough spot, unable to move Watson’s fully guaranteed contract, but that a rebuild may be on the horizon. Trading Newsome, a 24-year-old with solid performance this season, could help bring back valuable assets. Knox also identified the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as another possible destination for Newsome, given their struggles in pass defense and playoff aspirations.

Newsome Was in Trade Rumors During Offseason

During the 2024 offseason, Greg Newsome was involved in trade rumors concerning the Cleveland Browns. Although no trade occurred at that time, the team might revisit the idea before the NFL trade deadline.

Could The Cleveland Browns Utilize Versatility Of One Safety If Greg Newsome II Misses Time?

Despite the speculation, Newsome remained unfazed, stating he doesn’t give much thought to the rumors.

“I don’t really pay attention to it, but of course my family tells me and asks about it,” Newsome said in April, per Camryn Justice of WEWS Cleveland.

“My mindset is clear. I feel comfortable here. I believe GM Andrew Berry, the ownership, and my coaches understand my value. They know what I bring to the team—not just on the field but also in terms of energy and support, always celebrating. I trust they recognize my worth, so I wasn’t too concerned about the rumors.”

How Newsome Would Help the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers’ defense has ranked among the top in the NFL in recent years, and acquiring the Cleveland Browns’ 2021 first-round pick would further enhance that strength.

Newsome has excelled in coverage, achieving a coverage grade of 74.6 in 2023, according to PFF. In 2024, he has continued to perform well, currently holding a 66.8 coverage grade, which is considered above average.

While the Browns would feel the impact of losing him, trading him for a high draft pick could benefit the team in the long run.
