After the 2024 season, the Cincinnati Reds lost several catchers across their Double-A, Triple-A, and major league rosters due to free agency, leaving Tyler Stephenson as the only catcher on their 40-man roster. This created a need not only for a reliable backup at the big-league level but also for depth throughout the upper levels of the minors.

To address this, the Reds signed Alex Jackson to a minor league deal shortly after the free agency period began and recently added Will Banfield on a similar deal.

Banfield, 25, was a second-round pick by the Miami Marlins in 2018 out of Brookwood High School. He steadily advanced through their farm system and had a standout year in 2023, hitting .258/.302/.472 with 23 home runs at Double-A Pensacola. However, his 2024 season in Triple-A Jacksonville saw a dip in power, posting a .247/.297/.379 line with nine home runs, 24 walks, and 105 strikeouts over 371 plate appearances.

Historically, Banfield has struggled with low walk rates and high strikeout totals, but his performance against left-handed pitching in 2024 (.306/.330/.482) stood out as a potential strength.

Defensively, Banfield’s skills behind the plate are his most notable asset. Known for his receiving ability, athleticism, and strong arm, he recorded an average pop time to second base of 1.95 seconds in 2024—better than any Reds catcher that season and considered above average.

The Reds are likely to add more catchers during the offseason, aiming to secure a proven backup for the major league roster via free agency or trade. In the meantime, the signings of Banfield and Jackson provide valuable depth, similar to last year’s addition of Austin Wynns.
