The Indianapolis Colts are in urgent need of a tight end, and Paul Bretl of Colts Wire has suggested that He could be an underrated free-agent option for them.

While the tight end free-agent class isn’t particularly deep, Bretl believes He could provide valuable support to the Colts’ passing game. In his lone season with the Bengals, He rebounded with 665 receiving yards, averaging 10.2 yards per catch and scoring two touchdowns. Notably, nearly 70% of his snaps came from the slot, with fewer than 10% in-line. His primary role was as a pass-catcher.

Given the Colts’ need for a significant upgrade at tight end, He would be a solid addition. Should the Colts make a move for him this spring?

Mike Gesicki Listed as an Underrated Free Agent Option for the Colts

The Miami Dolphins selected Gesicki in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he recorded 22 receptions for 202 yards. His best season came in 2021 when he set career highs with 73 catches and 780 yards.

After five seasons in Miami, Gesicki signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots in 2023, finishing with 29 receptions, 244 yards, and two touchdowns in his sole season with the team.

In 2024, Gesicki joined the Cincinnati Bengals on another one-year deal, and in his first season with them, he totaled 65 receptions for 665 yards and two touchdowns while catching passes from Joe Burrow.

Should the Colts Sign Him?

In 2024, the Indianapolis Colts’ tight end group was arguably the weakest in the NFL, and fans would likely agree that’s putting it mildly.

Last season, four tight ends saw action for the Colts: Kylen Granson, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree, and Will Mallory. Together, they totaled only 39 receptions for 467 yards and two touchdowns. Granson led the group with 14 catches for 182 yards, but failed to score any touchdowns. Those numbers are far from impressive.

Mike Gesicki may not be a superstar, but he would be a valuable addition to the Colts in 2025.

The Colts should also consider drafting Tyler Warren, a highly regarded tight-end prospect from Penn State, in the upcoming NFL Draft. He has the potential to be a standout player.

Indianapolis needs to revamp its tight end position, and signing Gesicki while adding Warren could be a significant step in the right direction.

Quarterback Anthony Richardson hasn’t had the same early success as C.J. Stroud, failing to lead the team to the playoffs or make a major impact in his first two seasons. After completing less than 48% of his passes last season, Richardson needs all the help he can get in the passing game. Bringing in a reliable target like Gesicki could boost Richardson’s completion percentage in 2025, making him a perfect fit for the Colts’ future.
