The Chiefs added former Kansas State long snapper Randen Plattner to their roster on Monday.
The Kansas City Chiefs experienced an unfortunate setback on special teams during Saturday’s game against the Detroit Lions when starting long-snapper James Winchester sustained a shoulder injury and had to leave the game.
With Winchester out, the Chiefs turned to backup tight end Noah Gray, who had never long-snapped before. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Gray received coaching on the sidelines and performed well under the circumstances.

To avoid a similar situation in Thursday night’s final preseason game, the Chiefs signed former Kansas State standout Randen Plattner on Monday, as reported by Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride.

To make room for Plattner on the 90-man roster, the Chiefs waived injured offensive lineman McKade Mettauer.
It’s a great opportunity for Plattner, a Parkville, Missouri native, to snap in the final preseason game. Although he’s unlikely to make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster or practice squad, this game gives him a chance to showcase his skills for future NFL or professional opportunities.
Plattner, a 6-foot-3 long snapper, played in 62 career games at Kansas State (second-most in school history) and was a semifinalist for the Patrick Mannelly Long Snapper of the Year award last season.
After finishing his collegiate career, Plattner was invited to the 2024 Hula Bowl. Although he went undrafted, he signed with the Baltimore Ravens in May but was waived by the team on August 11.
