The two departing veterans, who struggled to stay healthy, declined their assignments.

The White Sox appear to be on a brief winning streak.

After persuading top managerial candidate Will Venable to join as their next manager, the team made a sharp and strategic waiver-wire addition: reliever, recently with the Houston Astros.

Murfee, 30, has been out for a year following Tommy John surgery after originally being drafted by Seattle in the now-defunct 33rd round in 2018. Despite the injury, he has put together a strong career when active with the Mariners.

WHITE SOX MAKE THREE ROSTER MOVES

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have made three roster updates:

– Claimed from Houston off waivers: RHP Penn Murfee.
– Declared free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment: RHP Matt Foster and RHP Jimmy Lambert.

Murfee, 30, missed the entire 2024 season due to recovery from Tommy John surgery performed in July 2023. Originally signed as a free agent by Atlanta in November 2023, he was claimed by Houston off waivers in March 2024. Standing at 6´2´´ and weighing 195 pounds, Murfee has a career record of 5-2, with a 2.70 ERA, a .179 opponent average, and 92 strikeouts across 80 appearances (one start) with the Mariners during the 2022-23 seasons. As a rookie in 2022, he posted a 4-0 record, a 2.99 ERA, a .192 opponent average, and 76 strikeouts over 64 appearances with Seattle.

A Nashville native, Murfee was drafted by Seattle in the 33rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Santa Clara University.

Foster, 29, appeared in six games (one start) for the White Sox last season, with a 2.70 ERA and four strikeouts, but his season ended after back surgery in September. He started the season recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, performed in April 2023.

Lambert, also 29, spent all of 2024 on the 60-day injured list with a right rotator cuff strain and had season-ending surgery in August.

After these changes, the White Sox’s 40-man roster remains at 37.

While the team has dealt with its share of injured pitchers, they’re bringing in one expected to be ready by spring training. Foster and Lambert, both debuting in 2020, leave with career WARs of 0.7 and 0.8, respectively. Meanwhile, Murfee’s strong performance gives him a promising chance for a roster spot coming out of spring camp.
