The Chicago White Sox may soon have a new owner after enduring one of the worst seasons in MLB history. According to a report by The Athletic, longtime majority owner Jerry Reinsdorf is open to selling the team.

Reinsdorf is reportedly in talks to sell his 19% stake, which is valued at approximately $2.05 billion. A group led by former MLB pitcher and executive Dave Stewart is considered the front-runner in the negotiations.

This marks a significant shift for Reinsdorf, who has repeatedly stated in the past that he had no interest in selling the team, turning down multiple offers.

Reinsdorf, who also owns the Chicago Bulls, bought the White Sox in 1981 for $19 million. Under his ownership, the team made seven postseason appearances and won the World Series in 2005. However, aside from that championship, they failed to advance beyond the first round in their other six playoff trips. In 2024, they set a record for most losses in a season with 121.

At the close of the season, Reinsdorf acknowledged the difficult year, particularly for fans. He said, “This has been an incredibly painful season for everyone, especially our supporters.

The challenges didn’t appear overnight, and the solutions won’t either. We’ve made tough decisions since last year, and those changes continued this summer. We look forward to naming a new manager with renewed energy this fall.”
