The St. Louis Cardinals took a flyer on utility player this year. After brief stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds, he was picked up off waivers in late June.
He has provided defensive versatility, seeing action at all three outfield spots as well as second base, shortstop, third base, and even logging a pitching appearance.
But at the plate, he has struggled mightily. In 33 games, he owns a .107/.138/.143 slash line with no home runs and just one RBI. Red Bird Rants’ Stephen Parello argues it’s time for the Cardinals to cut ties, writing that Hampson should be given the chance to seek another opportunity elsewhere.
Moving on from Garrett Hampson would open room for prospects to make their debuts

With the regular season winding down, St. Louis’ postseason hopes are fading fast. With little left to play for, it may be wise to bring up some of their top prospects for a taste of the majors.
Power-hitting outfielders Josh Baez and Nathan Church, both projected to debut next year, are strong candidates. The team could also give a look to catcher Leonardo Bernal, their No. 3 prospect, who’s expected to reach the big leagues in 2026.
