BREAKING NEWS: Broncos’ Sean Payton itching to trade up, lands three-down running back

With the NFL Draft less than two weeks away, there’s still plenty of unpredictability. Will Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders go in the top three, or slide toward the middle of the first round?

Will teams be aggressive in trading up, or will they mostly wait and see how the board unfolds?

Denver is currently slated to pick at No. 20, and projections vary widely on who might be available. A number of mock drafts have linked the Broncos to North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton following free agency.

He’s generally viewed as the second-best back in the class behind Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, but opinions vary. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah ranks Hampton 13th overall, while The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has him at 29 — a notable gap that signals disagreement over his first-round value.

In an earlier mock draft following free agency, The Denver Post had the Broncos taking Michigan tight end Colston Loveland at No. 20. That still feels like a logical choice — if he’s still available — but it’s no fun recycling picks in a new mock.

So for this version, we’ll assume the top two tight ends, Loveland and Penn State’s Tyler Warren, are off the board. The same goes for Jeanty. Either Hampton was scooped up earlier — maybe by Dallas — or Denver doesn’t view him as a fit at 20.

The rules here: no trades, seven total Denver selections, and a bonus dark-horse candidate included for each of the first three rounds.
