Two-time American League All-Star Alex Bregman remains one of the top available MLB free agents. After spending his entire nine-year career with the Houston Astros, he may be considering a new destination this offseason.

In 2023, Bregman recorded a .768 OPS over 145 games for Houston, hitting 26 home runs and driving in 75 runs. His career OPS of .848 ranks 20th among active players. A first-time Gold Glove winner in 2024, he has proven to be a strong contributor on both offense and defense.

Bregman has been linked to multiple teams in free agency, with the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox emerging as frontrunners, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY.

MLB Insider’s Latest Update On Alex Bregman’s Brings Bad News For Astros

Despite the Astros’ standing six-year, $156 million offer, which remains unchanged per KPRC 2 Houston’s Ari Alexander, Boston has opted to cap their proposal at four years, as reported by The Athletic’s Jen McCaffery.

McCaffery noted that Bregman is seeking a contract of around six years, while Boston is unwilling to go beyond four, as a longer deal would complicate their infield alignment. With Houston holding firm on its offer and Boston unwilling to meet Bregman’s contract length preference, Detroit remains a strong contender.

Nightengale also reported on Jan. 31 that if Bregman were to sign with the Tigers, he would likely need to transition to second base.
