The Boston Red Sox made two noteworthy minor-league signings on Wednesday.

According to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi, the team signed utility player Nate Eaton to a minor league deal, which includes an invite to big-league camp in the spring. If Eaton is added to Boston’s 40-man roster, he will earn $780,000. Earlier that day, the Red Sox also signed catcher Seby Zavala to a minor league contract.

Eaton reportedly attracted interest from teams in Japan and Korea, as well as minor league offers from nearly a dozen MLB clubs. Ultimately, he chose to join the Red Sox, per Morosi.

Both Eaton and Zavala have prior major-league experience. Eaton appeared in 72 games with the Kansas City Royals between 2022 and 2023, hitting .201 with one home run, 13 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases. In 2024, he played exclusively for Triple-A Omaha, where he posted a .252 batting average with 30 doubles, 16 home runs, 60 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases.

The 27-year-old, a 21st-round pick by the Royals out of Virginia Military Institute in the 2018 MLB Draft, is a versatile defender capable of playing second base, third base, and all three outfield positions. He also showcased his pitching ability in 2023, throwing a scoreless inning of relief for the Royals with a fastball reaching the mid-90s.

Eaton’s addition provides the Red Sox with a valuable depth option should injuries strike during the 2025 season.
