After the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Blake Snell on Tuesday, an MLB insider suggests that Snell’s former team could now become a serious contender to acquire Him, potentially challenging the Baltimore Orioles for his services.
While the Orioles’ 2024 season had its ups and downs, with 10 fewer wins than the previous year, there were notable positives. Despite a more competitive division, including tough competition from the New York Yankees, the Orioles still managed 91 wins, their second-highest total in the last decade. However, their early exit in the Wild Card Round left a lingering disappointment.
Looking ahead to 2025, many key players from last year’s roster are expected to return. Yet, they face a critical offseason with two major free agents: Corbin Burnes and Anthony Santander. Losing Burnes, their ace, would be a significant blow. However, with new billionaire owner David Rubenstein at the helm, there is optimism the team will financially invest in retaining Burnes.
The Orioles will face stiff competition in the free-agent market. Once Juan Soto makes his decision, teams that miss out on him are likely to shift their focus to Burnes. MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand believes that one team, in particular, may now have added motivation to pursue Burnes after losing their own ace this week.
Corbin Burnes’ 2024 stats: 2.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 15-9 record, 181 strikeouts in 194.1 innings.
San Francisco Giants could be aggressive in signing Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes
On Tuesday night, the San Francisco Giants experienced a significant setback to their rotation when ace Blake Snell decided to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the 2025 season and beyond. This opens the door for the Giants to aggressively pursue Corbin Burnes.
According to Feinsand, the Giants, now in need of a replacement for Snell, are reportedly very interested in Burnes.
Corbin Burnes’ contract projection: Six years, $250 million.
While San Francisco has struggled to land big-name free agents in recent years, the team’s financial resources and the recent appointment of Buster Posey as president have fueled optimism that they can make a splash this offseason.
