Right-handed pitcher Garrett McMillan, a former standout at the University of Alabama, has been promoted to the Altoona Curve, the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The move comes after an impressive showing with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Pittsburgh’s High-A affiliate.
McMillan has been dominant on the mound early in the 2024 season. Over six starts and 29 innings with the Grasshoppers, he posted a perfect 3-0 record. His performance included a 1.55 ERA and a stellar 0.79 WHIP. He limited opponents to just 20 hits and three walks, while recording 29 strikeouts and holding batters to a .196 average. His consistent command and ability to control games from the mound quickly caught the attention of Pirates management, earning him a well-deserved bump up the organizational ladder.

Before his professional career, McMillan built a solid resume in college. He spent two seasons at Shelton State Community College before transferring to the University of Alabama, where he pitched during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Despite missing six weeks due to injury, McMillan still managed to make a significant impact for the Crimson Tide, showing resilience, maturity, and a strong pitching arsenal.
McMillan’s journey through the MLB Draft process has been unique. He was first selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 19th round of the 2022 MLB Draft but opted not to sign. Instead, he returned to college to further hone his skills. His decision paid off when the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted him in the 14th round of the 2023 MLB Draft, providing him with a new opportunity to pursue his professional baseball dreams.
Now at Double-A Altoona, McMillan will face stiffer competition and a higher level of play, but his early results suggest he’s ready for the challenge. If he continues to perform at this level, he could find himself on a fast track to Triple-A or even the major leagues in the not-so-distant future.
