Tay Martin had some redundancy with Terrace Marshall, who is the 49ers’ reclamation project this season.
The San Francisco 49ers continue to make roster changes. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team has released wide receiver Tay Martin from the practice squad, where he had been since 2022. Martin was versatile but not particularly specialized in any single role.

Remaining receivers on the practice squad include Trent Taylor, valued for his return skills and ability to simulate the opposing team’s slot receiver, and Terrace Marshall, a reclamation project for the Niners this season.
Update from Kyle at 10:36 a.m. PT: The 49ers have signed linebacker DeShaun White to the practice squad as a corresponding move. White originally signed with the Buffalo Bills after the 2024 NFL Draft and spent time with the Bills and Las Vegas Raiders before being released by the Raiders on August 27.
While Martin and Marshall share similar skill sets, Marshall offers more potential, especially over the middle of the field, aligning with the 49ers’ offensive strategy for targeting wideouts.
Ronnie Bell, who is on the active roster, is expected to contribute significantly on the practice squad and scout team, along with Chris Conley.
Here’s the updated 49ers wide receiver lineup following Martin’s release:
– Brandon Aiyuk
– Deebo Samuel
– Jauan Jennings
– Jacob Cowing
– Chris Conley
– Ronnie Bell
– Terrace Marshall
– Trent Taylor
