The New York Mets head into the 2025 season with high hopes, boasting the third-best odds to win the World Series (+1000) and the second-best odds to take the NL East (+180), according to ESPN BET.
These expectations follow an eventful offseason, highlighted by the historic signing of outfielder Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million contract—the largest in MLB history.
Despite the splashy addition, the Mets may not be done making moves. Several players on the team have expressed support for pursuing Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara in a trade.
However, that possibility may be fading, as Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports the current Marlins front office continues to insist that Alcantara is not available.
Landing Alcantara would undoubtedly be a major boost for New York. Since his MLB debut in 2017, he’s racked up 910.1 innings with a 3.72 ERA, 1.155 WHIP, and a 20.7 WAR. His dominant 2022 season, which earned him the Cy Young Award, included 33 starts, 228.2 innings pitched, 207 strikeouts, and a stellar 2.28 ERA.
Adding to his value, Alcantara is locked into a team-friendly five-year, $56 million deal that runs through 2027, making him an attractive target financially as well.
