The Milwaukee Brewers have stayed active this offseason despite making only one significant trade, which sent Devin Williams to New York and brought Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin to Milwaukee. Most recently, they acquired right-hander Grant Anderson in a trade with the Texas Rangers. To accommodate Anderson on the 40-man roster, a corresponding move was required.

LHP Tyler Jay was designated for assignment following the Milwaukee Brewers acquisition of Grant Anderson

Last July, the Brewers traded RHP TJ Shook to the New York Mets in exchange for reliever Tyler Jay. The left-hander went on to make two appearances for Milwaukee, pitching three scoreless innings. Now, the former sixth overall pick from the 2015 draft has been claimed off waivers and found a new team.

The Seattle Mariners have claimed Tyler Jay

Tyler Jay made his MLB debut in 2024, though his time on the mound was brief, totaling just 7.2 innings. However, he found success in Triple-A, posting a 3.02 ERA over 56.2 innings across two minor league affiliates last season.

Why did the Milwaukee Brewers give up on Tyler Jay so quickly?

It’s unclear why Milwaukee moved on from Tyler Jay so quickly, especially after trading a promising pitching prospect to get him last July. While his fastball isn’t particularly dominant, his sweeper showed potential as a high swing-and-miss pitch in a limited sample size. Perhaps the Brewers were confident in their existing group of left-handed pitchers on the 40-man roster and saw more value in adding a sidearm right-hander to better fit their roster needs.
