Among the players being linked to the Seattle Mariners ahead of the trade deadline, few are as intriguing to fans as Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star third baseman.
Known for his power bat and upbeat “good vibes only” motto, He was a fan favorite during his time with the Mariners from 2022 to 2023. A reunion would be about more than nostalgia, though — his 28 home runs and .877 OPS this season would fill a glaring need in Seattle’s lineup, which has lacked power at third base. Entering Wednesday, Mariners third basemen ranked 25th in MLB with a .352 slugging percentage.
Seattle also knows that His power translates well at T-Mobile Park, where he hit 53 home runs across his two seasons with the team.

But with the current trade market favoring sellers and few impactful hitters available, Suárez could attract significant interest if the Diamondbacks decide to make him available.
According to longtime ESPN insiders speaking to Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk, one potential competitor could be the New York Yankees.
“Suárez would be a great fit in Seattle again, no doubt,” said David Schoenfield on Wednesday. “But the Yankees are in the market for a third baseman. They’re shifting Jazz Chisholm back to second, and there are other teams that need help at third. If Arizona shops Suárez, he’ll draw a lot of interest. He’s an All-Star this year and playing at a high level. Personally, I’d love to see him batting cleanup behind Cal Raleigh.”
Buster Olney also weighed in last week, saying, “On paper, Suárez is a perfect match for the Yankees. I’m sure they’re keeping a close eye on the situation.”
What each team has to offer
Outbidding the Yankees in free agency is no easy feat for a smaller-market team like the Mariners, but trades are a different story entirely.

Back in 2022, Seattle proved that by outmaneuvering New York for Luis Castillo, the top pitcher on the market at the time. The Mariners sent four prospects to the Reds in the deal, which played a key role in snapping their 21-year playoff drought. The Yankees, meanwhile, settled for Frankie Montas, who struggled with a 6.35 ERA and a -0.6 WAR across eight starts after coming over from Oakland.
A similar scenario could unfold this year. Seattle currently boasts a league-best nine prospects in MLB Pipeline’s top 100, while the Yankees have just one.
So if a bidding war for Eugenio Suárez breaks out, the Mariners are far better equipped to win it.
