BREAKING: LA Chargers blockbuster trade took one step closer to being a reality

The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft lived up to its unpredictable billing. By the time the LA Chargers were on the clock at No. 22, the choice was clear: North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton.

Due to the surprising twists of the first 21 picks, the Chargers faced limited options. However, that chaos could also present an opportunity for them to make a bold move for a proven player.

The Cincinnati Bengals selected edge rusher Shemar Stewart at No. 17, a decision that could significantly impact veteran Trey Hendrickson, who has yet to agree to an extension and may be on the trade block.

With Stewart now in the mix, a Hendrickson trade becomes more plausible—giving the Chargers a potential chance to strike.

Trey Hendrickson trade is one step closer to reality for the Chargers

Whether the Chargers go after Trey Hendrickson could hinge on who’s still available in the second round and how much the Bengals are asking. If Cincinnati continues to demand a third-round pick, the Chargers may simply opt out.

Bears Could Try to Trade for Bengals TE Trey Hendrickson

That said, the longer Hendrickson remains on the market, the more his trade value declines. This also opens the possibility for Los Angeles to offer a future draft pick instead, making a deal more likely.

It’s much easier for the Chargers to part with a future third-rounder than one from the current draft. With the draft ongoing and no clear suitors for Hendrickson, a future pick trade becomes a realistic option.

The Chargers have both the cap space to take on Hendrickson’s contract in 2025 and the flexibility to offer him an extension after this season. Now 30, Hendrickson is still playing at a high level and could maintain Pro Bowl form for at least three more years.

In the short term, he could fill the role of Joey Bosa and provide a natural transition as Khalil Mack’s time with the team nears its end. Having recorded 17.5 sacks in each of the last two seasons, Hendrickson has outperformed Bosa during his stint in L.A.

With top edge rushers already taken in the first round, the odds of a Hendrickson trade have gone up. If the Chargers draft a running back in Round 1 and focus elsewhere in Round 2, an edge rusher remains a key need—and Hendrickson could be the answer.

This Chargers front office has played things safe over the last 15 months, giving them room to make a bold move when the timing is right. A trade for Hendrickson, depending on the price, would be a smart one.

And by selecting Kris Jenkins with the 17th pick, the Bengals have clearly signaled to the Chargers that Hendrickson is available—and the asking price may be dropping.
