Mike Trout has spent his entire career patrolling center field for the Los Angeles Angels, but due to his recent injury history, the team is making a strategic change. On Monday, the Angels announced that Trout will transition to right field in an effort to keep him healthier throughout the season.

“I knew it was coming,” Trout said via ESPN. “I just wanna be on the field.”

Trout has been a strong defender, but staying healthy has been a challenge—he’s played in just 266 of a possible 648 games over the last four seasons. Angels manager Ron Washington is optimistic about the move, stating that he believes Trout will become “one of the best right fielders in the game.”

General manager Perry Minasian echoed that sentiment, noting that right field at Angel Stadium suits Trout’s skill set. “It’s a short wall, and with his athletic ability, I think we’re gonna see some highlight plays of him robbing homers at home.” He added that Trout’s versatility could allow him to play anywhere if needed but emphasized that the priority is keeping him healthy.

Despite the shift being a major adjustment, Trout is embracing the change. “It’s gonna be fun,” he said. “I’ll enjoy it. Like I told them, I’m gonna go out there and just be as comfortable as I can. If I need to get early work, just to work on some things, get more comfortable, I’ll do that.”

Now, the focus will be on whether this move helps Trout stay on the field and contribute at a high level for the Angels this season.
