Georgia football is off to a relatively slow start with its 2026 recruiting class. Currently, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs have just four players committed. While it’s still early in the process—it’s only January—other programs, like Oregon and Texas A&M, have already secured 10 commitments, putting Georgia in a position where they’ll need to catch up.

As Smart and his staff work to bolster their recruiting class, they must also focus on retaining their current commits to prevent any potential flips. Unfortunately, the possibility of losing a committed player to another program is always present, and one of Georgia’s current commits appears to be seriously considering another school.

Four-star wide receiver Vance Spafford is among the nation’s top football recruits. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Spafford is ranked No. 56 overall, No. 9 among wide receivers in his class, and No. 9 in California.

Currently, Spafford is the highest-rated commit in Georgia’s recruiting class, making him a key piece for the program. Losing him would be a significant blow. While there’s no confirmation that Spafford is considering decommitting, he announced on Sunday that he will be visiting USC, which recently extended him an offer.

It’s not uncommon for committed players to explore other programs, but this visit stands out since Spafford is from California, and USC is a premier program in his home state. There’s speculation that he may have grown up dreaming of playing for the Trojans, which could put Georgia at risk of losing him in the recruitment race.

The aftermath of Spafford’s visit to USC will be telling. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and his staff will need to work hard to solidify Spafford’s commitment, as his presence would be a significant asset to the Bulldogs’ program.
