The Chicago Cubs bolstered their pitching depth on Wednesday by signing veteran reliever Lucas Luetge to a minor-league contract. Luetge, who was recently released by the Boston Red Sox, last pitched at the major-league level with the Atlanta Braves in 2023.
This move follows the Cubs’ recent signing of Adrian Houser on Tuesday. Luetge joins the organization after posting a strong 3.01 ERA with Triple-A Worcester in 2024, and he’ll aim to continue that success with Triple-A Iowa.

Bringing in Luetge represents another low-risk acquisition for the Cubs, who stand to benefit if he can contribute at any level. Just a few years ago, Luetge enjoyed successful seasons with the New York Yankees in 2021 and 2022, following an earlier stint with the Seattle Mariners, where he began his career in 2012.
The Cubs have a history of uncovering under-the-radar talent, as seen with the additions of Jorge Lopez and Tyson Miller, both of whom have strengthened their bullpen. This success highlights the team’s effective scouting efforts.
It’s notable how many new players the Cubs are bringing into the organization. Christian Bethancourt has been a standout behind the plate, and David Bote has been a solid contributor since rejoining the major-league roster.
While the Cubs still need to invest in higher-caliber talent, their ability to extract value from unexpected sources is undeniable.
