The Indianapolis Colts need to show tangible improvement in the 2025 NFL season, especially with this being head coach Shane Steichen’s third year at the helm — a point when ownership typically expects results. However, injuries are already becoming an issue at training camp.

On Thursday, Steichen revealed that star defensive tackle DeForest Buckner missed practice due to a foot injury, according to Nate Atkins of the IndyStar. Steichen also provided additional injury updates: Charvarius Ward sat out for rest, while Jaylon Jones is dealing with a hamstring injury that is reportedly more serious than the one affecting JuJu Brents.

Buckner has been a cornerstone of Indianapolis’ defense since arriving in 2020, consistently producing both as a pass rusher and run stopper. He’s recorded at least 58 tackles and 6.5 sacks in each season with the Colts.

One of Buckner’s greatest strengths is his durability. The 31-year-old has dealt with only a handful of injuries, all involving his right ankle. The most recent was a high ankle sprain in Week 2 of the 2024 season, which sidelined him for five games.

Steichen didn’t offer further details about the current injury, but CBS Sports suggested it may be a new issue, not connected to his previous ankle problems.

Still, Colts fans are hoping for a quick recovery, knowing how important Buckner is to the team’s success.

Colts quarterbacks ‘neck and neck’ in training camp battle

If the Colts can’t get consistent quarterback play in 2025, a strong defense won’t be enough to carry them.

Third-year signal-caller Anthony Richardson and veteran Daniel Jones are locked in a competitive battle for the starting role at training camp. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, head coach Shane Steichen described the competition as “neck and neck” on Wednesday.

Fowler also noted that Richardson has taken a more humble and focused approach this offseason. He admitted he didn’t put in enough work during the 2024 campaign and is now working on refining his throwing mechanics.

The battle remains intense. Jones is still getting familiar with the new offensive system, which has prevented him from separating himself in the competition.

Both quarterbacks have been rotating in with the first-team offense, and how the coaching staff distributes preseason snaps could offer fans a clearer picture of who might win the job.
