After Chase Burns was only able to record one out in his outing last night, the Cincinnati Reds had to rely heavily on their bullpen to get through the game. As a result, the team made roster moves today to bring in fresh arms ahead of their series in Boston.

Right-hander Sam Benschoter and left-hander Sam Moll have been called up from Triple-A Louisville, taking the roster spots of lefty Joe La Sorsa and righty Connor Phillips.

Benschoter needed to be added to the 40-man roster, but the Reds had an open spot after designating Jeimer Candelario for assignment. Pronounced “Ben-scooter,” Benschoter joined the organization as an undrafted free agent in 2021 out of Michigan State. He has worked in both starting and long relief roles, leaning more toward the latter over the past two seasons.

This year, the 27-year-old has spent the full season in Triple-A, making four starts and 17 relief appearances for Louisville. He holds a 4-2 record with a 4.06 ERA across 51 innings, with 13 walks and 44 strikeouts. He’s performed notably better against right-handed hitters (.627 OPS) than against left-handers (.779 OPS).

Benschoter is a strike-thrower with a five-pitch mix: a four-seam fastball, a two-seamer, a slider, a curveball, and a splitter. The curve and splitter are rarely used, each accounting for about 5% of his pitches. His fastballs have averaged 93.4 and 92.8 mph this season.

Joining him is lefty Sam Moll, who brings big league experience but has struggled mightily in 2025. In three major league appearances this season, Moll posted an 18.00 ERA. His numbers in Triple-A haven’t been much better, with a 7.79 ERA over 20 outings for Louisville.
