The 2025 MLB regular season has just over a month left, and the St. Louis Cardinals are experiencing a year that feels a lot like 2024.
Around this time last season, St. Louis was once again hovering around the .500 mark and battling for a Wild Card spot in the National League. Now, a year later, the organization is preparing for a change in leadership in the front office.
Already, significant moves have been made. John Mozeliak traded away several veterans to give incoming president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom more future assets to work with, and there’s no guarantee Bloom won’t continue reshaping the roster beyond 2025.
Insider believes the Cardinals could still trade Sonny Gray
The Cardinals parted ways with several pitchers at the trade deadline, sending Ryan Helsley, Steven Matz, and Phil Maton to new teams.
Although there was speculation that Sonny Gray might also be dealt, he exercised his no-trade clause from the contract that keeps him in St. Louis through 2026.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Gray and the Cardinals could revisit trade discussions after the season.
“Gray said he wants another shot at winning, another chance to pitch in October… ‘I do want those moments more,’ he told Rosenthal. ‘They’re just more fun for me.’”

Whether he gets that chance in St. Louis remains uncertain. With Chaim Bloom set to take over as president of baseball operations, the franchise is expected to stay focused on rebuilding. The Cardinals haven’t reached the postseason since 2022.
