It’s that time of year when the NHL’s content machine starts revving up, though it remains quiet as we await the beginning of training camps and the preseason.
In the meantime, we’re seeing intriguing stories, like the one suggesting Sidney Crosby could be a rental player for the Montreal Canadiens. TSN analyst Travis Yost floated this idea in a September 3 article, exploring potential destinations if Pittsburgh were to trade its captain.

Yost argues that no team would gain more from a Crosby rental than the Canadiens, given their current weakness at center. He estimates that adding Crosby and adjusting their lineup could translate to an improvement of about five wins.
Despite Crosby’s age of 37, he remains an elite player, having scored 94 points (42 goals) last season.
While the likelihood of such a trade is low, Yost points out that the Canadiens would be the prime beneficiaries. Crosby’s leadership could greatly benefit their young roster.
The Penguins, having missed the playoffs for two consecutive seasons, might consider this trade as a way to initiate a rebuild before Crosby’s contract ends in 2025 or before he leaves as a free agent.
