The Boston Red Sox boast some of MLB’s most exciting young talent, and much of this season has showcased just that. Still, injuries have sidelined key youngsters like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer. While those setbacks sting, both are viewed as long-term cornerstones, with Anthony already locked into a significant pre-arbitration contract.
The bigger uncertainty lies with Boston’s veterans—most notably Alex Bregman, who can opt out of the final two years and \$80 million on his deal. Many expect him to do so, given the likelihood of landing a lucrative long-term contract this offseason. Yahoo Sports has echoed that sentiment, projecting Bregman will test free agency.

Despite missing two months with a quad injury, Bregman’s debut season in Boston has been a success, highlighted by his best offensive performance in three years and strong defense at third base. Beyond the field, he’s been invaluable in guiding a young Red Sox clubhouse through a turbulent campaign.
“Bregman still has two years left at \$40 million annually, but the expectation is he’ll opt out and re-enter the market. Though recurring lower-body injuries have diminished his speed and athleticism, there’s a strong belief across baseball that he’ll continue to maximize his skills. Any team would benefit from adding him,” wrote Jake Mintz.
Alex Bregman Will Have Many Suitors

Several teams are expected to pursue him, with the New York Yankees among those on the Red Sox’s radar. Still, if Boston wants to retain him, there’s good reason to think Bregman would be receptive.
Sports Illustrated’s Zach Pressnell pointed out that the Detroit Tigers might also be a possible destination, but emphasized that Boston stands out as the best fit. With the strong support Bregman receives from the Red Sox fan base, it’s a situation he could see himself committing to for the long haul.
Is Staying With the Red Sox Ideal for Alex Bregman?
Although the Houston Astros organization and its fans held him in high regard, he chose to move on last offseason.

“The Red Sox are a natural fit. Bregman seems to enjoy Boston, and the fan base has embraced him fully. It’s been an ideal pairing, and a championship run this October could make it even more special. Boston has shown it’s willing to invest in top talent, and with how well Bregman has performed, the front office may be more inclined to offer the salary, contract length, and incentives he’s looking for to keep him around,” the report noted.
Even so, Bregman is likely headed for an exciting free agency, especially considering that last winter there didn’t appear to be much demand for him.
