SNY’s Joe DeMayo recently proposed a mock trade in which the New York Mets would acquire All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for prospects Brandon Sproat, Ryan Clifford, and Blade Tidwell.
DeMayo noted that the deal might be a long shot since the Red Sox entered the All-Star break on a 10-game winning streak and now appear to be strong playoff contenders. That momentum could lead them to hold onto Duran until at least the offseason. However, with a surplus of outfield talent, Boston might consider trading him for controllable, near-MLB-ready arms. Clifford could also give them a long-term option at first base.

For the Mets, acquiring Duran would give them arguably the best outfield in the league, pairing him in center with Brandon Nimmo in left and Juan Soto in right. Although Duran’s .749 OPS marks a slight dip in production, he’s still delivered 25 doubles, 10 triples, eight homers, and 16 steals before the break. He’s also under team control through 2028, making him an attractive long-term asset.
This trade scenario brings a lot to consider. While it would be tough for the Red Sox to part with Duran, their organizational depth in the outfield and the upside of Sproat and Tidwell could reshape their future rotation. Clifford, too, has the potential to be a key bat.

From the Mets’ perspective, dealing these prospects would be costly, but adding a dynamic talent like Duran could significantly boost their short- and long-term competitiveness.
Deals between two playoff-caliber teams are uncommon, but this one could work for both sides: Boston takes a short-term step back in exchange for long-term gains, while New York strengthens its roster for the present and beyond.
