In today’s edition of Auburn Tigers News, redshirt freshman Hank Brown is named the backup quarterback and Hugh Freeze shares his biggest concern after fall camp
For the first time in several seasons, Auburn football fans haven’t had to watch a significant quarterback competition during the offseason. The starting QB role was Payton Thorne’s to lose, and as anticipated, he held onto the position.
Quarterbacks coach Kent Austin noted last week that redshirt sophomore Holden Geriner and redshirt freshman Hank Brown were in a close competition for the backup spot. However, during this week’s Tiger Talk, head coach Hugh Freeze confirmed that Hank Brown would serve as the primary backup.
“Hank is primarily going to be the backup,” Freeze said, as reported by AL.com. “When you evaluate all his reps, he’s been outstanding throwing the ball during camp. He’s made some excellent throws.”
Brown made his debut late in last season’s Music City Bowl, impressing fans by completing seven of nine passes for 132 yards.
Hugh Freeze shares his biggest concern after fall camp
Fall camp is now behind the Tigers, and they are fully focused on preparing for their season opener, which is less than two weeks away. The playbook has been implemented on both offense and defense, and areas of strength and weakness have been identified.
However, it’s important to note that these assessments are based on practice against their own teammates. How this will translate into a live game situation remains to be seen. Head coach Freeze is particularly concerned about the secondary.
“My biggest concern at the moment is likely the secondary — we just don’t have much depth there,” Freeze mentioned, according to Auburn Undercover. “They’ve struggled to cover our receivers, but that might be a positive sign for our offense.”
Are the receivers exceptional, or is the secondary facing significant challenges? Only time will tell. The Tigers will be back in action at Jordan-Hare Stadium on August 31.
