The St. Louis Cardinals are gearing up for a key National League Central matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, and they’ve shaken up their roster ahead of the three-game series, per Katie Woo of The Athletic.

Woo confirmed Derrick Goold’s earlier report, noting on X (formerly Twitter) that the Cardinals are calling up catcher Jimmy Crooks and infielder Cesár Prieto from Triple-A Memphis.

In corresponding moves, Alec Burleson (wrist) is headed to the 10-day injured list, while Yohel Pozo will also be sidelined due to a concussion.

Crooks, ranked as the Cardinals’ No. 6 overall prospect by MLB.com, is a 24-year-old catcher with significant upside. Prieto, 26, provides infield depth and could make an immediate impact. Pozo, 28, has appeared in 62 MLB games across his career, posting a .242/.273/.392 slash line, but is currently dealing with a concussion.

Burleson’s injury comes shortly after his walk-off homer against the Pirates. The 26-year-old has been a steady contributor this year, batting .286 with a .337 OBP and .451 slugging percentage.

It’s been a tough 2025 season for St. Louis, as they sit fourth in the NL Central at 66–69, trailing the first-place Brewers by 17 games.

Still, the Cardinals remain in the Wild Card chase, sitting 6.5 games back with just over a month left in the regular season.

Their upcoming schedule includes the weekend set in Cincinnati before returning home for six straight games against the Athletics and Giants.
