The San Francisco Giants kicked off trade season with a major splash, landing Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox. Since then, activity has slowed in the Bay Area — but that’s expected to change soon.

With the Giants firmly in the playoff hunt, they’re expected to stay aggressive leading up to the trade deadline.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the team’s biggest need is in the starting rotation, especially after parting with Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks in the Devers trade. Passan identified Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly as the ideal trade target for San Francisco.

“The Giants have already made the boldest move of the deadline, acquiring designated hitter Rafael Devers to boost their offense,” Passan wrote. “Intradivision trades can be difficult, but Buster Posey has shown in his first year as president of baseball operations that he’s willing to make bold moves others might avoid.

“Kelly would be a clear upgrade over the back end of the Giants’ rotation, where Justin Verlander and Hayden Birdsong have struggled with ERAs of 6.27 and 5.73, respectively, since June 1.”

With the rotation in need of reinforcement, a trade for Kelly — a veteran on an expiring deal — could be a smart solution.

Despite his age, Kelly has had a strong season, posting a 3.41 ERA in 19 starts and accumulating 2.7 WAR, putting him on track for a career-best year.

If the Giants can land Kelly and make a few more key moves, they’ll be in a strong position to make noise come October.
