Breaking: Chargers Revamp Offensive Line Part Ways With $21 Million Starter

The Los Angeles Chargers are overhauling their offensive line, opening the door for new starters next season. Among those under growing scrutiny is veteran lineman. Once considered a key building block, He is now at risk of losing his spot.

After inking a three-year, \$21.75 million extension in 2023, He was expected to be the long-term answer at right tackle. But after a lackluster season in which he allowed six sacks and earned a disappointing 57.8 grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF), his role with the team is now in jeopardy.

Trey Pipkins’ Future With the Chargers in Jeopardy

The Chargers tried moving Trey Pipkins to guard last season in hopes of boosting his value, but the experiment fell flat. His disappointing play at the position — one where many linemen tend to thrive — has raised doubts about his versatility and long-term role, especially in contrast to new addition Mekhi Becton, who successfully made a similar switch with the Eagles.

Adding to the dilemma is Pipkins’ \$6.75 million base salary for the final year of his contract. While not exorbitant, it’s a steep cost for someone likely to be a backup. Releasing him would clear that full amount from the cap, with only \$2.5 million in dead money, and given the Chargers already have close to \$25 million in cap space, cutting Pipkins could create even more room for roster moves.

At 28, Pipkins may be on borrowed time. Unless he shows marked improvement in camp or proves he can reliably fill multiple roles on the line, his future in Los Angeles appears increasingly uncertain.

Pipkins Could Still Hold Value on Another Team

It might be in everyone’s best interest for Trey Pipkins and the Chargers to part ways. If Los Angeles releases him, there’s a good chance other teams would show interest. Even though he’s had recent struggles, Pipkins brings 56 career starts to the table since being selected in the third round of the 2019 draft.

His next opportunity will likely hinge on finding a position that suits him best. While his performance at guard left much to be desired, his experience at right tackle—where he was a near full-time starter in 2022 and 2023—should carry weight. He helped protect quarterback Justin Herbert during a couple of chaotic seasons and held up reasonably well physically in a tough role.

Nate Gosney of Last Word on Sports recently mentioned the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, and New York Giants as possible destinations. Pipkins might not walk into a starting job, but he could be a reliable depth option capable of stepping in when injuries arise.

Ultimately, whether he stays in Los Angeles or moves on, Pipkins’ NFL career is probably not finished. Still, with the Chargers heading in a new direction, he’ll have to show he’s more than just a costly reserve to secure his spot.
