If the Boston Red Sox are serious about moving All-Stars ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, the Cincinnati Reds should make a strong push for Him. And if He isn’t available, Boston still has several outfielders who could be a great fit in Cincinnati.
Boston stunned the baseball world on Sunday by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, and two prospects. While it may seem early for a team sitting just a game over .500 to start dealing key players, if the Red Sox are indeed willing to make moves, the Reds should at least explore what it would take to acquire Him or other options.
Cincinnati’s offense has shown improvement lately, largely due to Elly De La Cruz’s red-hot stretch. However, with Austin Hays and Noelvi Marte still sidelined and an outfield consisting mostly of platoon players, Reds GM Nick Krall should pick up the phone and see what Red Sox executive Craig Breslow is willing to discuss.
Rafael Devers trade puts Reds in perfect spot to pull off next blockbuster deal
If any Red Sox player is likely to be moved next after Rafael Devers, it’s Jarren Duran. While the split between Devers and Boston came with unique circumstances, it’s reasonable to think that Craig Breslow and his staff would be open to listening if the Reds — or another team — showed serious interest in Duran.
That said, Duran isn’t the only coveted outfielder on Boston’s roster. While less probable, the Gold Glove-winning Wilyer Abreu might be available if Cincinnati was willing to part with a prospect-heavy package. But if the Reds aren’t ready to make a splashy move — which has often been the case — a more modest deal for right-handed hitter Rob Refsnyder could be a more realistic target that still makes sense for Boston.
The Reds can’t afford to stay quiet at this year’s trade deadline. Their fans are hungry for a postseason return, and with Elly De La Cruz emerging as a star and future Hall of Fame manager Terry Francona at the helm, the team has legitimate playoff potential. With the Red Sox shifting into seller mode, now is the perfect time for Cincinnati to explore a big trade with Boston.
