Alabama fans expressed gratitude to numerous players who chose not to enter the NCAA transfer portal following Nick Saban’s retirement. Ty Simpson, in particular, was someone who could have received offers from top programs across the country. The former five-star quarterback from Tennessee, who could have started almost anywhere else in college football, decided to stay because of his belief in the Crimson Tide’s culture.
Simpson, who has bulked up by adding 12 pounds of muscle to his 6’2″ frame, now weighs 215 pounds as he enters his third year. Over the summer, he focused on building his body and has earned the trust of the entire program to run the offense.
Although Simpson is currently the primary backup to Jalen Milroe, he has a promising future with Alabama. He’s had to be patient, similar to another former Alabama quarterback, Jacob Coker, who led the Crimson Tide to a College Football Playoff National Championship in 2015. Coker, who started his college career at Florida State University, transferred to Alabama in 2014. After serving as a backup for a season, he eventually led the team to a national title.
Coker, who admires Simpson’s determination, recently praised him on “The Bama Standard” for staying committed to Alabama. He noted that Simpson could have transferred and received any offer he wanted but chose to stay because he believes in the program and Coach DeBoer. Coker highlighted the rarity of such loyalty in today’s college football landscape, emphasizing that it speaks to Simpson’s high character and trustworthiness.
Simpson has had a strong showing in spring practices and is excelling in fall camp, positioning himself well for the future.
