The San Francisco Giants boast a stellar starting rotation and bullpen — but their offense has lagged behind.
While there have been bright spots at the plate, with Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee performing at All-Star levels, the lineup overall lacks consistency. Of the six Giants hitters who qualify for batting title consideration, only free-agent addition Willy Adames is hitting below .240 — he’s at .204 — but the others haven’t been dominant either.
The situation worsened when third baseman Matt Chapman, who led the team with 12 home runs and was enjoying a bounce-back season in terms of power, landed on the injured list with no clear return date.
For the Giants to realistically push for a National League playoff spot — whether through the NL West or a Wild Card — they’ll need their offense to wake up. And internal solutions may not be enough.
According to a recent Athletic article (subscription required), San Francisco tops the list of teams most in need of a bat at the trade deadline. The Giants’ primary concern: first base.
While 20-year-old top prospect Bryce Eldridge was recently promoted to Triple-A, expecting him to fix the first base issue in 2025 is asking a lot. He’s still early in his development with just a few games at the higher level.

The Giants have cycled through options at the position, including Wilmer Flores, who’s had a respectable season (.259/.325/.416, 11 HR, 51 RBI), but the club seems to prefer him in the designated hitter spot. LaMonte Wade Jr. was recently designated for assignment and dealt to the Angels, leaving the position in flux.
To truly address their offensive shortcomings, the Giants will likely need to pursue a trade — possibly for a rental — and it may take parting with a promising prospect or two to land the kind of bat that can keep them in the playoff mix.
Simply put, the need is pressing.
