The Boston Red Sox appear to be considering a new first base option — and it’s not Rafael Devers.
On Thursday, the Red Sox acquired first baseman from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations. He was sent to Triple-A Worcester, while Masataka Yoshida was moved to the 60-day injured list to make room on the roster.
Noda, 29, debuted in the majors with the Oakland Athletics in 2023 and had a strong rookie campaign, hitting 16 home runs and driving in 54 runs with 77 walks and a .770 OPS over 128 games.
His performance dipped in 2024, however, slashing just .137/.255/.465 with 37 strikeouts across 36 games. After being claimed off waivers by the Angels following the 2024 season, he started 2025 in Triple-A before being designated for assignment on May 18.
Since Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury on May 2, the Red Sox have used several players at first base. Nick Sogard, called up from Triple-A, currently holds the spot, while Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro have also filled in. Rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell has been practicing at first, but manager Alex Cora indicated a position switch isn’t imminent.
One name not being considered for first base is Rafael Devers. After already moving from third base to designated hitter earlier this season, Devers has declined another position change. With Noda now in the system, it seems even less likely he’ll be asked to shift.
Boston is set to play a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park on Friday following Thursday’s rainout.
